Long vowels are taught 1/3rd of the way through our Fast Phonics course. Up ‘til then, the student has been learning short vowels and the consonants, as if long vowels didn’t exist. Here is a way to use the benefits of rhyming to learn the long vowels EZPZ. Teach these ditties orally, by saying:
If a vowel has a dash
change its sound fast!
long a a plate of 8
is what I ate!
long e EZ treats
is what I eats!
long i ice cream I'm eye-in
while rice I am fryin'
long u you use a tube
to unify food [think blender]
long o to open the oats [think oatmeal cookies]
is what I hopes!
