Two strategies for shaping the heart of a young child

If your life is involved with helping a little child adapt to this world, here are two practical things you could do to shape, soothe and mold an eternal soul as a child of God.

Make the simple booklet, the Gospel in Colors, and hold the child in your lap while studying its pages and talking about their meaning. (It’s a free download.) This is especially helpful if you’re in a tough patch of character development. If an issue of your little tyke’s behavior is remaining unresolved, you could say something like this: “Sweetie, what we’re going through now is more than you or I can fix. We need to ask God to fix your heart. This little booklet tells us how to do it.” Read the book and pray it through with the child. We know someone who did just that with a 22-month-old the other day: “We stopped and looked at the wordless book of how black her sin is and I had her pray and ask God to change her heart so she could obey. Instant switch after that.”

If your child is fighting sleep, have him or her listen to scriptural lullabies (not ones about babies falling out of treetops, someone having a great fall, or everyone falling down). In Better Arms Than These is original Christian lullabies with beautiful classical piano. Works every time, for at least one particular tyke who doesn’t like to sleep in the car seat on long trips. Your choice for receiving the mp3 files on an audio CD or downloadable; 30 minutes.  Click here to see the words on the CD case insert.  And, click here to listen to a portion of one of the songs online.
